Hysteroscopy is a procedure that allows a doctor to look inside the uterus using a thin, lighted tube (hysteroscope) that is inserted into the vagina to examine the cervix and inside of the uterus. It is often used to diagnose and treat causes of abnormal bleeding. Hysteroscopy is also used during operative procedures to guide the surgeon.
Colposcopy is performed using a special lighted, magnifying instrument – that looks like binoculars – to examine the cervix. A speculum is used to dilate the vagina and a bright light is shined into the vagina, while the doctor looks through the lens. Colposcopy is frequently used if a Pap test result is abnormal, to locate and biopsy a sample of tissue.
LEEP / Conization
Conization (also called cone biopsy) and LEEP (loop electrosurgical excision) are specialized diagnostic surgical treatments that can identify and remove abnormal tissue from the cervix in cases of cervical dysplasia (abnormal pap results).
Gynecologic ultrasounds are used to image the female pelvic organs, including the uterus, ovaries, fallopian tubes, endometrium and bladder. It can be an effective tool in diagnosing conditions such as ovarian cysts, endometriosis, lesions, ectopic pregnancy & gynecologic cancer.
During endometrial biopsy a small tissue sample is taken from the lining of the uterus (endometrium) to look for abnormal cells. It is useful in the diagnosis of abnormal uterine bleeding, endometrial dating, and infertility evaluation. It is also used in cancer screening.
A vulvar/vaginal biopsy is often performed to determine the cause of unexplained itching, redness, swelling, or changes in color in the vulva or the vagina. A vulvar biopsy may also be performed by a doctor if a lump, growth or sore has appeared in that area.
