Ovulation induction is the process of prescribing certain synthetic hormones to stimulate a woman’s ovaries to produce multiple eggs — rather than the single egg that normally develops each month.
Ovulation induction can be used as a stand alone treatment, or as part of the in vitro fertilization (IVF) process. The release of multiple eggs improves the chances of conception, because some eggs don’t fertilize or develop normally after fertilization.
Other medications can be used as well, to prevent premature ovulation before the developing eggs are ready – or to make the lining of the uterus more receptive to embryo implantation.
If you are struggling to conceive, schedule an appointment with our caring fertility specialists, and we will determine which fertility treatments are right for you.
In Vitro Fertilization (IVF)
In vitro fertilization (IVF) is the most effective form of assisted reproductive technology.
During IVF, eggs are collected from the woman’s ovaries, then fertilized with sperm in a laboratory, after which the fertilized embryo(s) are implanted in the woman’s uterus. Each IVF cycle takes about two weeks.
IVF can be performed using the woman’s own eggs and her partner’s sperm. Or the eggs and/or the sperm may be provided by known parties, or by anonymous donors.
A gestational carrier — another woman who has the embryo implanted in her uterus — can also be used during IVF.
Our caring and knowledgeable fertility experts can help you understand how IVF works, and whether this method of treating infertility is right for you.
