Endometriosis is a painful condition in which the uterine lining tissue (endometrium) grows outside the uterus on the ovaries, fallopian tubes and pelvic lining. The displaced uterine tissue continues to bleed with each menstrual cycle, becoming trapped with no way to exit the body – causing pain, irritation, and eventually scar tissue and adhesions that cause the organs to stick to one another.
Women with endometriosis typically experience cramping and menstrual pain that’s far worse than other women. If left untreated, endometriosis will typically worsen over time – and can cause fertility issues.
The good news is that our caring and experienced gynecologists and surgeons offer several highly effective, minimally invasive treatments for endometriosis.
In many cases hormonal contraceptives are a good first line defense against endometriosis. Gonadotropin-releasing hormone (Gn-RH) drugs can block the production of ovarian-stimulating hormones, causing endometrial tissue to shrink. Progestin inhibitors and aromatase inhibitors may also be prescribed.
In more severe cases, surgery to remove the endometriosis implants while preserving the uterus and ovaries (conservative surgery) may decrease pain while also increasing the woman’s chances of being able to successfully conceive.
